Thoughts On The Star Wars VII Cast Revealed

Star Wars LogoGo away for a few hours to do some work and you miss out on all the big announcements and it doesn’t come much bigger than this today in the film world as the Star Wars Episode VII cast has been revealed. Oddly enough this news was announced before May 4th so one wonders what they’ll bring out then, if anything at all.

The lineup is as follows: Oscar Isaac (Drive, Inside Llewyn Davis), Andy Serkis (Gollum, Caesar), Adam Driver (Girls), Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, About Time), John Boyega (Attack The Block), Daisy Ridley (That one episode of Mr Selfridge…seriously, that’s all I’ve got on her) and Max Von Sydow (Robin Hood, Shutter Island) and NOT ONLY THAT but the originals such as Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker in their iconic roles.

Also released with this announcement was a photo of the new cast and the original cast together around in a circle with director JJ Abrams.

Films News - Star Wars Episode VII Cast Revealed

JJ Abrams on the announcement added:

We are so excited to finally share the cast of STAR WARS: EPISODE VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.

The announcement pretty much has me feeling like this at the moment…

Darth Vader DanceNot only for the fact that they FINALLY released SOMETHING about Episode VII, but that most of the new cast assembled are up and comers (bar the exception of Serkis and Von Sydow). Fan of both Isaac and these guys, I didn’t like the film but I thought Boyega was good in Attack the Block so it’ll be interesting to see who he plays, Driver I know nothing about other than he’s been linked with major studio films recently and appears on Girls, Gleeson is an interesting choice and as for Ridley, she is the definition of unknown, I’ve referenced Mr Selfridge as that’s all I’ve seen her in (Yes, I’ve watched Mr Selfridge, just not to faint as I get my Jeremy Piven fix while I await the big screen Ari Gold-ness). Not only is the cast choices interesting,  but they have finally announcement the worst kept secret that the original cast members would also be returning to their roles. Also with that black and white photograph of the cast gathered together, I can’t help but feel excited, original trilogy excited and look forward to erasing the memory of the prequel trilogy with hopefully new levels of Star Wars goodness. Should also be noted still that Lawrence Kasdan (Empire Strikes Back) is writing the screenplay and John Williams is coming back to compose the score, I can’t help but be excited. Now the speculation will begin on who the actors will portray? I mean Driver was rumoured to be not only be a cast member, but also be a villain in this film, is that still the case? Von Sydow you would instantly reckon he’ll play a villain, sith-like perhaps? Where there’s a master, there’s an apprentice.

I look forward to hearing what more details will unfold in the next months. Probably for how long it took them to finally reveal this, it will probably be another four months before we hear anything new, the big teases.

Star Wars: Episode VII is set for a December 2015 Release.
