After teasing about which role he was going to play in the DC Film Universe, The Rock brought it down to two specific characters over the last few weeks that it was between Shazam and Black Adam. Finally last week The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) took his twitter once again to announce that he will be playing Black Adam in the upcoming ‘Shazam’ film.

Black Adam in the comics was initially the main adversary to Shazam but in recent turns in the DC Comics, Black Adam is more on an anti-hero. Initial thoughts are it is about time he was allowed to announce which character he will be playing and thankfully it’s Black Adam, now the question becomes who will actually play Captain Marvel/Shazam to go head to head with The Rock?
New Line President and COO Toby Emmerich had a few things to say about the project.
On Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson being in the film:
“We Love Dwayne and have had nothing but success with him over the years,. When I look at Dwayne both off screen and on screen, he is such a larger than life character and it just made perfect sense to me that we put him in a DC comic movie. You look at these comic book characters and they have this certain swag and charisma that Dwayne carries with him where ever he is so that’s why this always made sense.”
On the tone of the ‘Shazam’ film:
“It feels to me like Shazam will have a tone unto itself. It’s a DC comic, but it’s not a Justice League character, and it’s not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies.Black Adam is a complex character. The villain in superhero movies is often, I think, what makes the movie. And I thought Dwayne’s take on the character, and the way that he saw Black Adam, was really compelling and fun.”
It’s unclear as to when ‘Shazam’ will be getting a cinematic release but it is believed that it will be one of the first to be scheduled after ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ is released in 2016. Darren Lamke, screenwriter on ‘Jack The Giant Slayer’ and the upcoming ‘Goosebumps’ film is currently penning the script for ‘Shazam’.
