24: Reboot Still In Development…Without Jack Bauer

TV News - 24 - Reboot Still In Development without Jack BauerNews of Prison Break wasn’t the only thing Fox let us in on as gave an update to reporters during the studios summer press tour as Fox Chairman and CEO Gary Newman talked about the 24 reboot still being in development stages.

Entertainment Weekly reports the story, saying that Manny Coto and Evan Katz are penning the script, with 24 producer Howard Gordon supervising. Fox Chairman and CEO Gary Newman stated though the network hasn’t seen the script yet, it will center on a new character in the absence of Jack Bauer.

Gary Newman also said:

Obviously we would love to have Kiefer [Sutherland] and we went to him first. It isn’t something he wants to do at this point, but he encouraged us to continue and look for a way to bring the show back. Honestly I don’t know whether we’ll see any old characters or not. It would not surprise me if it’s a total reset in terms of the characters.

The idea of doing a 24 series without Kiefer Sutherland has been floating about since the start of the year (as posted here) and still I have no real issue with them doing a limited series run without the character due to how 24: Live Another Day wrapped up…just as long as it’s not permanent. Now the issue of last two lines from the Newman quote do scare me slightly as they could go with a clean slate with new characters in a new setting, which might just be too risky even for Fox considering the fan base already being up in arms at the ‘blasphemy’ of doing a show without Jack.
