Prison Break: Returning In 2016 As A Limited Series

TV News - Prison Break - Fox Officially Order Sequel Event SeriesIt’s official! Fox has confirmed that Prison Break will be returning to the small screen once again in 2016 as a 10 episode event series.

There has been talks about a revival of the show since June, with TVLine reporting that Wentworth Miller had ‘floated the idea’ of a Prison Break continuation with Fox and last night it was confirmed that the show will return in the form of a limited.

Chairman and CEO Gary Newman announced at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills yesterday that:

It’s going to bring back both brothers, Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell. This is the pure vision of the creator of the show. It’s going to take a little bit of a detour from where we left off [with the straight-to-DVD coda], but it should feel very satisfying and event-ised. Fans will be excited about seeing these characters back together again.

Co-Chairman and CEO Dana Walden added:

I would describe it as a bit of a sequel. It picks up the characters several years after we left them in the last season of the show. The brothers will be back. Some of the iconic characters from that show will be back. I don’t think [exec producer] Paul [Scheuring] knows exactly where he’s going over the 10-episode arc, but it definitely will address some questions that were set up at the end of the series for a new audience.

Address some questions such as the fact Michel Scofield died in The Final Break? Newman quipped that that particular plot point would be “ignored,” while Walden explained, “What [Paul] pitched to us was a very logical and believable — in the world of Prison Break — explanation for why our characters are alive and still moving around the world.”

Prison Break ran over the course of 2005-2009 lasting four seasons and a TV movie (The Final Break) and though the confusion of Michael’s death may still linger over their intentions of this ‘sequel’ limited series, the fact that Newman stated that that particular plot point would be ignored is interesting. Now I enjoyed the first two seasons of Prison Break, then it just didn’t work out for me in season 3 though it had a nice setup to do interesting things with it and as for season 4….they just decided to have mindless fun with it with all it’s absurdity. The limited series brings forth an interesting question? What if the limited series is successful? Will Fox try to make another small order series or attempt a full series revival? Where will this leave Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell in their roles on The Flash and upcoming series DC’s Legends of Tomorrow? As far as I’m concerned the story of Michael and Linc was done but I suppose we’ll find it if it is worth it’s return next year….and they better bring William Fichtner back as Mahone.
