Deadline has reported that Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road) is in negotiations with Sony to star in the female lead role of Tirana for Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, which will be directed by Nikolaj Arcel.
All the big media outlets (Variety, Collider, Deadline) are reporting that Abbey Lee will be joining a cast that includes Idris Elba playing the gunslinger Roland Deschain and Matthew McConaughey will be playing the villainous Man In Black. Abbey Lee will be seen in the upcoming Gods of Egypt and Nicolas Winding Refn’s next film The Neon Demon, but is probably more well known for her feature debut role as The Dag in George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road.
Ron Howard, once attached to direct the film, is on board as Producer alongside Brian Grazer, Erica Huggins and Stephen King, while MRC are still developing a complimentary television series on the material. The first installment in the series of books focuses on Roland, the Gunslinger, establishing a relationship with young protege Jake Chambers, roaming an Old West-like landscape in search of the dark tower, in the hopes that reaching it will preserve his dying world. It’s unclear how faithful the film will be to the first instalment, or will merge a few books together, it is unknown at this time.
I’ll be honest, I’m more excited about the news of Elba and McConaughey seemingly being confirmed at this point from various media outlets that they are attached in the two key roles here. I’ve only started reading the first instalment and haven’t heard of Tirana yet or how much of a role that she has in the saga but casting Abbey Lee is interesting as she was impressive in Mad Max: Fury Road, in my opinion.
For now, The Dark Tower is scheduled for a cinematic release on the 13th January 2017.
