Godzilla 2: Gareth Edwards Exits Directing

Film News - Godzilla 2 - Gareth Edwards Exits DirectingDeadline exclusively reports that Gareth Edwards has departed from directing duties for Godzilla 2.

The report goes on to say that the exit was a friendly one as Edwards and Legendary Pictures reached an agreement before the announced of Godzilla 2 being pushed back from its original slate of 8th June 2018 to 22nd March 2019. Edwards initially signed on to direct the sequel back in 2014 after the original made $529m worldwide but after being allowed time to go off to direct Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and now another push back to release date, it seemed inevitable that both parties would end up going their separate ways.

Now Legendary and Warner Bros. will be on the lookout for a director to replace Edwards whilst also set plans in motion for Godzilla vs Kong to followup after Godzilla 2, which is set for cinematic release on the 20th May 2020, which has finally become possible as Kong: Skull Island was brought back from Universal to Warner Bros., with Legendary acquiring the rights to additional characters from Toho’s Godzilla universe such as Mothra, Odan and King Ghidorah.

The news is not surprising but still disappointing as it seem that the director and the studio had a good relationship working on Godzilla and even put a sequel on hold in order to work again but understandable now that the latest push back on it is too much and Edwards will have other projects that he wants to pursue.

Godzilla 2 is scheduled for cinematic release on the 22nd March 2019.
