Deadline, Entertainment Weekly and other media outlets are reporting that Tyler Hoechlin has been cast as Superman to appear in the upcoming second season of Supergirl.
Speaking about the casting announcement, Executive Producer of Supergirl Andrew Kreisberg said:
Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman. We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character.
This will be the first live-action television version of the Man of Steel since Smallville, which went off the air back in 2011 and Tom Welling played Clark Kent. It was only reported last week that the CW were looking to cast someone to finally play the figure that has appeared (in some fashion) throughout Supergirl’s first season and now Hoechlin will appear in the first two episodes of Season 2 as he visits Kara in National City.
I’ll admit that I’m surprised that Tyler Hoechlin has been cast in the role as I assumed he left his long-term role as Derek Hale on Teen Wolf to pursue more film projects. To be fair, looking through his IMDB, most of them are all wrapped up, so it will be interesting to see how Hoechlin does with a ‘light-hearted’ superhero rather than a conflicted superhero (could’ve seen him more in a Jason Todd persona rather than Superman). Tyler Hoechlin’s credits include Road To Perdition, Everybody Wants Some!! and Undrafted.
