Considering the way the award season has been going so far, there isn’t that many surprises in the nominations this year. Granted, it is a shock to see Suicide Squad to get an Oscar nomination (for makeup and hairstyling). In the acting categories, supporting I probably would’ve swapped Jeff Bridges for his co-star Ben Foster in Hell or High Water and also swap Michael Shannon for his co-star Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Nocturnal Animals in that category. In the lead actor category, I’d probably swap Viggo for Gyllenhaal’s performance in Nocturnal Animals. While these are just small nitpicks in the nominations, the one that I have issue with the most is the lack of love for Sing Street in the Best Original Song category. You can literally pick any song from that film to nominate and unfortunately it missed the cut…while La La Land has two songs in that category.
The 89th Academy Awards will be screened live on the 26th February 2017.
