Scarface: Antoine Fuqua No Longer Directing

Film News - Scarface - Antoine Fuqua No Longer Directing

Variety is exclusively reporting that Antoine Fuqua has stepped down from directing Universal’s reimagining of Scarface to to direct The Equalizer sequel claim insiders.

Back in August of last year, Universal brought Fuqua on board the project to direct the retelling of the classic gangster story which will focus on the immigrant rags-to-riches story but will present itself in contemporary Los Angles. Sources say that Fuqua wanted to do Scarface, but since he spent so much time developing the script for The Equalizer sequel and Sony wanted to start prepping the film with Denzel Washington very quickly, Fuqua decided that he couldn’t move on from a project he invested so much in.

Now the search begins for Universal to find a director, though the studio still aims to have the film shooting to commence in spring. Sources also tell Variety that Diego Luna has been attached to star in the Scarface remake. The film will be a Bluegrass Films and Global Produce production, and will be produced by Marc Shmuger, Scott Stuber, and Dylan Clark. Marty Bregman, producer of the 1983 Scarface film, will also produce. Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter penned the most recent draft.
