Deadline is exclusively reporting that recently debuted series American Gods has been given a second season renewal at Starz.

The series, based on Neil Gaiman’s 2001 award-winning novel, focuses on Shadow Moon, a man serving time in prison. With only days remaining in his sentence, he’s given an unexpected early release after his beloved wife Laura is killed. When returning home to attend the funeral, Shadow meets a man named Wednesday who appears to be nothing more than a con artist and offers him a job – to be his bodyguard.

Starz programming President, Carmi Zlotnik, released a statement saying:

Bryan Fuller, Michael Green and Neil Gaiman have evolved the art form of television narratively, structurally and graphically with American Gods, and we’re thrilled to be working again with these artists as they continue to build the worlds and wars of the gods.

FremantleMedia North America’s co-CEO Craig Cegielski, added:

American Gods has been a ground-breaking series born out of belief and it’s thrilling to be partnered with Starz to continue this ambitious story. Neil Gaiman, Bryan Fuller and Michael Green have ignited a conversation through cinematic magic, presented through a diverse ensemble of actors that continue to keep us engaged and inspired.

It’s believed that the second season will consist of eight episode, same as the first season. The series is created by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green. While I’ve seen the two episodes that have aired and I’ve no idea what the hell is going on, I’m definitely intrigued by the show and it’s gorgeously shot.

American Gods stars Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, Emily Browning, Crispin Glover, Bruce Langley, Yetide Badaki and Pablo Schreiber.
