The Hollywood Reporter is exclusively reporting that Disney have found their Mulan for the upcoming live-action adaptation in Liu Yifei.
Disney’s retelling of an old Chinese folktale focusing on a young Chinese maiden who learns that her weak father is called up into the army in order to fight the invading Huns. Knowing that he’ll not survive war in his condition, she decides to disguise herself as a man and take his place.
Liu Yifei (also known as Crystal Liu) has appeared in films such as The Four, The Assassins and IP Man 3. The casting comes after a long, extensive search from Disney as a team of casting directors visited five continents and looked at nearly 1,000 actors for the role, looking at credible martial arts skills, ability to speak English and star quality. The studio focused on casting a ethnically young Chinese woman in the role of Hua Mulan and found that in Liu Yifei, who is nicknamed ‘Fairy Sister’ in China and has become of the country’s most popular stars of the current generation.
Niki Caro has been attached to direct the project since February of last year, with Chris Bender, Jason Reed and Jake Weiner serving as producers.
Mulan is being eyed for a 2019 cinematic release.
