Deadline is reporting that Vanessa Rubio is the latest name to join the cast of YouTube Red’s television series Cobra Kai, the sequel to The Karate Kid.
Set thirty years after the evens of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, where we find a down and out Johnny Lawrence who, seeking redemption, reopens the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. It reignites his rivalry with a new-successful Daniel LaRusso, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor Mr. Miyagi. We will follow the journey of the duo addressing demons from their past and present frustrations…..through karate.
Vanessa Rubio (whose credits include How To Be Single and Master of None) will be playing the role of Carmen, Miguel’s hard-working mother, who would do anything to protect her son. Determined to raise Miguel to be nothing his father, she’d prefer he avoid contact sports and focus on the debate team. She’s not thrilled to learn Johnny has been secretly training her son how to fight, but softens once she sees Johnny’s genuine affection for Miguel.
The series will be a ten-episode half-hour comedy that will see Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprise their roles as underdog Daniel LaRusso and bully Johnny Lawrence. Vanessa Rubio will be joining a cast that includes Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Jacob Bertrand, Hannah Kepple, Mary Mouser and Griffin Santopietro.
