Deadline is exclusively reporting that Kristen Wiig is in talks with Warner Bros and DC to play the villainous role of Cheetah for Wonder Woman 2.
Last year Wonder Woman has us witnessing Diana, an Amazonian princess, growing up on the paradise island known as Themyscira until one day an Allied intelligence operative named Steve Trevor crashes off the coast of the island, leading to a battle with German forces on the shore. Trevor explains to the Amazons of the war raging in the outside world. Learning of the millions dying in the war, including women and children, Diana leaves her home to fight in the war to end all wars.
Kristen Wiig (whose recent credits include Downsizing and Mother!) could be playing the role of Cheetah, a key villain in Wonder Woman history though it’s unknown at this time which particular character from the comics could be portrayed here in the sequel (The characters that have been known as Cheetah: Priscilla Rich, Deborah Domaine, Barbara Ann Minerva and Sebastian Ballesteros).
The Variety report on the news claims that sources told them that Wiig was always high on director Patty Jenkins’ list to play the role and had let Wiig know about her interest before Jenkins left to location scout for the sequel. The Deadline report states that it appears that a deal could happen quickly as the sequel is rumoured to begin shooting in the summer. It would be a statement of intent and empowerment from the studio that both the main characters of a comic book film are women. We are to believe that Wonder Woman 2 will be set in the 1980’s during the Cold War. Kristen Wiig feels like an ‘outside the box’ style casting for me, but that’s mainly due to me still seeing Wiig as a comedic actress, even though she’s tackled more dramatic roles in recent years. After the success of Wonder Woman last year and that Jenkins’ has eyeing Wiig for the part, I’m definitely intrigued to see how this will play out.
Wonder Woman 2 is scheduled for cinematic release on the 1st November 2019.
