Detective Pikachu: Omar Chaparro Joins Cast For Live-Action Pokemon Film

Deadline is reporting that Omar Chaparro is the latest name to join the cast of Legendary’s live-action Pokemon film Detective Pikachu.

Based on the video game of the same name, the premise focuses on Pikachu, a self-styled investigator who is good at finding things. When Justice Smith’s character’s father is kidnapped, he’s forced to team up with Pikachu in order to find him.

The report doesn’t state what role Chaparro (whose credits include How To Be A Latin Lover and Oberboard) will be playing the film. Back in July of last year, it was reported that Legendary acquired the rights from The Pokémon Company to develop a live-action adaptation of the popular video game franchise. Since first being introduced to Japanese audiences in 1996, the franchise has sold 295m copies worldwide and has had an animated series spanning twenty seasons. Universal Pictures will handle distribution of the live-action film outside Japan, while Toho, The Pokémon Company’s longtime collaborator, will handle distribution in Japan.  The film is being directed by Rob Letterman, whilst the script was written by Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch. Mary Parent and Cale Boyter are serving as producers on the project under the Legendary banner alongside Joe Caracciolo Jr. Pokémon’s Tsunekazu Ishihara is serving as executive producer.

Omar Chaparro will be joining a cast that includes Justice SmithKathryn NewtonRyan ReynoldsKen WatanabeBill NighyChris GeereSuki Waterhouse and Rita Ora.

Detective Pikachu is set for a cinematic release on the 10th May 2019.
