The official synopsis for the film is as follows:
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam, courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.
Personally I loved the tone of the trailer we got here for Shazam!, even though I’d call it more of an official trailer than teaser trailer (it’s nearly three minutes long for god sake!). The kid playing Billy (Asher Angel) looks solid in that role, while Zachary Levi in terms of tone looks perfect to portray a kid in an adults body…with superhero powers (it helps that it looks and sounds like we’ve about 40% Chuck Bartowski in there). I thought the footage shown was solid, and I’ve seen the negative comments over the backpack kid/floss dance and I think it works because it’s a kid from the internet age in a superheroes body, what else would you expect him to do in terms of acting silly/goofy? We get a brief glimpse of Mark Strong’s Actor Sivana and I’m sure we’ll get more about his motivations in the trailers to come.
Shazam! is currently scheduled for cinematic release on the 5th April 2019.
