Stargirl: Brec Bassinger Cast As Title Character For DC Universe Series

Deadline is reporting that Brec Bassinger has been cast in the lead role in the upcoming superhero series for the DC Universe streaming service Stargirl.

Stargirl was created by Geoff Johns back in 1999, known as Courtney Whitmore, who receives her powers by wielding Starman’s Cosmic staff and wears the Cosmic Converter Belt which gives her agility and enhanced reflexes. The character has appeared in animated series such as Justice League Unlimited and appeared in live-action form in the final seasons of Smallville and also during the second season of CW’s Legends of Tomorrow, portrayed by Sarah Grey. The television series version sees high school student Whitmore band together with the Justice Society of America to fight villains, past and present.

Brec Bassinger is Courtney Whitmore, whose High School experience is derailed when her moth marries and moves household from Los Angeles to Blue Valley in Nebraska. Struggling to adapt, she discovers her stepfather has a secret past as a superhero sidekick. She also discovers an artefact of immense power, a long-lost hero’s cosmic staff and Courtney becomes the unlikely inspiration for an entirely new generation of superheroes.

Brec Bassinger credits include Bella and the Bulldogs and All Night. Speaking about her casting, Geoff Johns said:

There is no other character in comic books more special to me than Stargirl, and after searching far and wide I can say there is no other actor on the planet that embodies her more than Brec Bassinger. Brec’s warmth, strength, humor and positive energy are core to who Courtney Whitmore is. I’m so grateful she’s signed on for the role.

The Stargirl series has been ordered for a thirteen-episode season, aiming for a 2019 premiere release date and will be produced by Warner Bros. TV, Geoff Johns’ Mad Ghost Productions and Berlanti Productions.
