Deadline is exclusively reporting that choreographer Mette Towley is the latest name to join Working Title and Universal’s film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats.
The musical follows a tribe of cats called the Jellicles over the course of one night as they decide which of their group will ascend to the ‘Heaviside Layer’ and come back to a new life. The musical is the fourth-longest-running show in Broadway history and the sixth-longest-running in London’s West End.
Mette Towley will be playing the role of Jemima, the youngest kitten, a soprano, in the tribe who is known for her sweet-nature, mystical, and possibly telepathic talents. She is possibly the youngest kitten in the tribe and shows compassion for others around her. Jemima is known for continuing Grizabella’s song after the glamour puss collapses during the song ‘Memory’. This will also be Mette Towley’s big screen debut and is known for her collaborations with Pharrell Williams and N*E*R*D. Towley will be joining a cast that includes Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift, James Corden, Ian McKellen and Laurie Davidson.
Tom Hooper (Les Misérables and The Danish Girl) will be directing the film and has been prepping the project for two years, with the aim now to commence shooting this Autumn in the UK. The film is adapted by Lee Hall.
