The film is based on twenty-year-old Aziah Wells aka Zola, who rose to internet stardom in 2015 when she chronicled, one hundred and forty characters at a time, a wild forty-eight hour odyssey with an exotic dancer, the dancer’s boyfriend and a pimp.
Riley Keough (whose credits include Logan Lucky and Hold The Dark) will allegedly be playing the role of the exotic dancer, while Colman Domingo (whose credits include Fear The Walking Dead and First Match) will allegedly be playing the role of the charming-yet-violent pimp. The same report states that Nicholas Braun is being eyed to potentially play the role of the dancer’s doting, bipolar boyfriend.
When the project was in early development, James Franco was attached to direct and produce, but now Janicza Bravo will be helming the feature. Bravo wrote the screenplay alongside playwright Jeremy O. Harris, Andrew Neel and Mike Roberts.
Zola is scheduled to commence shooting this fall.
