Deadline is reporting that Ari’el Stachel is the latest name to join the cast of A24 drama Zola.
The film is based on twenty-year-old Aziah Wells aka Zola, who rose to internet stardom in 2015 when she chronicled, one hundred and forty characters at a time, a wild forty-eight hour odyssey with an exotic dancer, the dancer’s boyfriend and a pimp.
The report states that Ari’el Stachel (whose a Tony Award winner for Best Actor in a Musical category for his performance in The Band’s Visit) will be playing the role of Sean, Zola’s fiancé. He’ll be joining a cast that includes Taylour Paige, Riley Keough, Colman Domingo and Jason Mitchell.
When the project was in early development, James Franco was attached to direct and produce, but now Janicza Bravo will be helming the feature. Bravo wrote the screenplay alongside playwright Jeremy O. Harris, Andrew Neel and Mike Roberts.
