The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Diego Luna and Scoot McNairy will be returning for the upcoming second season of Netflix crime drama series Narcos: Mexico.

The first season explored the origins of the modern drug war, back to the 1980’s when the Mexican traffic world was a loose and disorganised confederation of independent growers and deals. It focused on the rise of the Guadalajara Cartel, led by Félix Gallardo, unifying traffickers in order to build an empire. When DEA agent Kiki Camarena moves his wife and young son from California to Guadalajara to take on a new post, he quickly learns that his assignment will be more challenging than he ever could have imagined. As Kiki garners intelligence on Félix and becomes more entangled in his mission, a tragic chain of events unfold, affecting the drug trade and the war against it for years to come.

Diego Luna will return as the leader of the Guadalajara Cartel, Félix Gallardo, while Scoot McNairy (who narrated the first season until he appeared in the final episode) will be returning as DEA Agent Walt Breslin.

During an interview with THR recently, showrunner Eric Newman had this to say about Breslin’s introduction, whilst awaiting news of renewal:

“If it’s the end, [McNairy’s introduction] is just the continuing revolving doors of, ‘Here comes the new guy and this time we’re going to get it right. We’ve now seen that with agents Murphy (Boyd Holbrook) and Pena (Pedro Pascal) in seasons one and two, Pena alone in season three, Kiki Camarena in Narcos: Mexico, and now a new guy, who is basically going to come down and probably get nothing done and the cycle will continue. Of course, if we do continue, that’s something we could explore. What both the archival footage and narrator voiceover does is that it reminds people that it’s real. You realise, ‘Oh, that happened.
