The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Stellan Skarsgård is the latest name to join the cast of Legendary’s reboot of Dune, which is being directed by Denis Villeneuve.
Dune is set in the distant future and follows Paul Atreides, whose family assumes control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, jurisdiction over Arrakis is contested among competing noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship with nature, as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s reign.
Stellan Skarsgård (whose credits include Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and Chernobyl) will be playing the role of one of the villains, Baron Harkonnen, whose family previously ruled Arrakis and has a long hatred of the Atreides family, plotting with the galactic emperor to destroy it. He is also the uncle to the brutish character to be played by Bautista.
Denis Villeneuve is also co-writing the script with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. Villeneuve will also serve as producer on the project alongside Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, while Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, Thomas Tull and Kim Herbert will serve as executive producers.
Stellan Skarsgård will be joining a cast that includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson and Dave Bautista.
