The Hunchback of Notre Dame: Disney Developing Live-Action Remake

Deadline is exclusively reporting that Disney is developing a live-action remake of The Hunchback of Notre Dame by enlisting Tony-winning playwright David Henry Hwang to write a script, with Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz attached to write the music and Mandeville producing along with Josh Gad.

Based on the Victor Hugo novel, the 1996 animated feature focused on Quasimodo, a grotesquely deformed but kind-hearted young man who was abandoned by his parents as an infant and thrown down a well, then to be rescued by the priests of Notre Dame. He lives in the massive cathedral in the heart of Paris, earning his keep as a bell ringer as well as become the ward of Judge Frollo, a spiteful man who treats Quasimodo with indifference and loathes the Gypsies, who he hopes to clear out of Paris with the help of Phoebus. One a gypsy woman named Esmeralda shows Quasimodo kindness, he soon starts to fall in love with her. Quasimodo isn’t the only one smitten however as Judge Frollo inflames his hatred for the Gypsies when she refuses his proposals.

The report states that while it’s believed that Josh Gad could play the title character in question, insiders say that the studio have no solid casting set in at this point.
