Variety is exclusively reporting that Finn Wolfhard and Carrie Coon are in negotiations with Sony Pictures to star in Jason Reitman’s upcoming Ghostbusters film.
The original, released in 1984, had us following three scientists at Columbia University in New York City being fired from their positions and going into business for themselves as a ghost extermination company aka Ghostbusters. Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz and Egon Spengler are giving a case from Dana Barrett who is scared out of her apartment in a high rise building due to strange happenings and sights within the apartment itself. As the Ghostbusters become popular and add another member to the team in Winston Zeddmore, they find out that the odd happenings at Dana’s apartment is by an ancient demigod named Gozer, god of destruction and they have to prevent New York City from being turned into ruins.
The sequel was released in 1989, set five years after the events of the first film, the Ghostbusters have been plagued by lawsuits and court orders, and their once-lucrative business is bankrupt. But when Dana has ghost problems again, the boys come out of retirement and are promptly arrested. The Ghostbusters discover that New York is once again headed for supernatural doom, with a river of ectoplasmic slime bubbling beneath the city and an ancient sorcerer attempting to possess Dana’s baby and be reborn.
Then there was the 2016 reboot from Paul Feig, focusing an a female led group of Ghostbusters, focusing physicists Abby Yates and Erin Gilbert, two friends that co-authored a book that asserts the existence of ghosts in this world. Gilbert disowns the work as she works as a professor at Columbia University, while Yates continues to study the paranormal at a college with engineer Jillian Holtzmann. When Gilbert reunites with Yates and assists with her and Holtzmann in a paranormal investigation, they have an encounter with a ghost, leading her to join the two of them in the project, along with subway worker Patty Tolan, as they begin to learn the reason behind the increase of ghost activity and what it means for the city.
It was announced at the end of January that the film was in the works. The report from Variety says that sources tell them that the story will focus on a single mother and her family, with Coon playing the mother and Wolfhard playing her son. It’s unclear how the two will be connected with the Ghostbusters group.
Jason Reitman will be co-writing the screenplay with Gil Kenan, who directed Monster House and the Poltergeist remake.
Ghostbusters is scheduled for cinematic release on the 10th July 2020.
