The Hollywood Reporter is exclusively reporting that Idris Elba is in talks with Warner Bros. to replace Will Smith as Deadshot in James Gunn’s upcoming DC film The Suicide Squad.
The 2016 film, directed by David Ayer, followed villains such as Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc, who are forced into the service of the government in exchange for lighter sentences. While the film was met with mixed reception critically, it would end up making $745m worldwide on its $175m budget.
In October of last year it was reported that James Gunn, after his firing from Guardians of the Galaxy 3 that summer over tweets from 2008 and 2009 resurfaced in which he made insensitive and controversial jokes, was brought on board by Warner Bros. to write the script for the Suicide Squad sequel.
THR’s sources say that Idris Elba met with James Gunn last weekend and that it went well enough that discussions with the studio began in earnest, with Elba becoming the first and only choice for the studio and director.
The Suicide Squad is scheduled for cinematic release on the 6th August 2021.
