Media outlets are reporting that Fox has cancelled X-Men drama series The Gifted after two seasons.
The series, set in the X-Men universe, focuses on the Strucker family, where father Reed works to prosecute mutants as a district attorney for the government’s Sentinel Services. He and his wife Caitlin soon learn however that their children are both mutants, so in order to protect them, Reed reaches out to the Mutant Underground before Sentinel Services get them. the second season sees the Mutant Underground search for their friends and family who left with The Inner Circle. Having tracked them outside of Washington, D.C., they must contend with new groups with extreme ideologies, both human and mutant alike, to stave off a brewing conflict.
The Gifted was well received critically (Season 1: 74% Season 2: 85% on Rotten Tomatoes), but wasn’t pulling great viewing numbers when the second season aired until its end in February, drawing 3.3m viewers. Though it has better viewing numbers online, like most shows in the superhero genre, so there could be a chance that the series could be picked up and saved at either Freeform or Hulu. Time will tell on that one.
