Deadline is reporting that Ebony Obsidian is the latest name to join the cast of Hulu drama series Wu-Tang: An American Saga, a ten-episode drama focusing on one of the most influential groups in hip-hop history.
Created and written by Wu-Tang Clan frontman The RZA and writer Alex Tse, the series is set in early 90’s New York at the height of the crack cocaine epidemic, the show tracks the Clan’s formation, a vision of Bobby Diggs aka The RZA, who strives to unite a dozen young, black men that are torn between music and crime but eventually rise to become the unlikeliest of American success stories. Chris Robinson is set to direct and co-executive produce the pilot episode.
The report states that Ebony Obsidian (whose credits include If Beale Street Could Talk and The Hunt) will be playing the recurring role of Nia, Divine’s girlfriend who turned a blind eye to his drug dealing. But his recent encounters may be the thing that pushes her and their relationship past the breaking point.
The series is being executive produced by Wu-Tang clan members The RZA and Method Man, alongside Alex Tse and Imagine Television’s Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo. Fellow Wu-Tang members Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa and GZA, as well as the estate of Ol’ Dirty Bastard, will serve as consulting producers.
Obsidian will join a cast that includes Ashton Sanders, Shameik Moore, Siddiq Saunderson, Marcus Callender, Zolee Griggs, Erika Alexander, Julian Elijah Martinez, Dave East, Vinnie Pastore, Anthony Chisholm, Armen Garo, Caleb Castille and Johnell Young.
