Elvis Presley: Austin Butler Cast As Elvis For Untitled Biopic From Baz Luhrmann

Deadline is exclusively reporting that Austin Butler has been cast as Elvis Presley in an untitled drama biopic about the legendary musician from Baz Luhrmann at Warner Bros.

The upcoming biopic is being described as focusing on Presley’s rise and zenith, with a major aspect being his relationship with Colonel Tom Parker, who will be played by Tom Hanks.

The report states that Butler tested for the role as did Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller and Harry Styles. Luhrmann released a statement about Butler’s casting, saying:

I knew I couldn’t make this film if the casting wasn’t absolutely right, and we searched thoroughly for an actor with the ability to evoke the singular natural movement and vocal qualities of this peerless star, but also the inner vulnerability of the artist. Throughout the casting process, it was an honor for me to encounter such a vast array of talent. I had heard about Austin Butler from his stand-out role opposite Denzel Washington in The Iceman Cometh on Broadway, and through a journey of extensive screen testing and music and performance workshops, I knew unequivocally that I had found someone who could embody the spirit of one of the world’s most iconic musical figures.

Baz Lhurmann will be directing the film from the screenplay he co-wrote with Craig Pearce. He’ll also produce the project alongside Catherine Martin, Gail Berman, Patrick McCormick and Schuyler Weiss. Andrew Mittman will serve as executive producer.

Shooting for the project will commence early next year in Queensland, Australia.
