Variety is exclusively reporting that Taika Waititi will be directing his next film at For Searchlight before doing Thor: Love and Thunder, which will be based on the 2014 football documentary Next Goal Wins.
The documentary follows American Samoa, who in 2001 were famously beaten by Australia in a World Cup qualifying match 31-0, the record for the largest winning margin in an international match. They go on a losing streak since that game and the documentary focuses on the Football Federation American Samoa looking to change their fortunes to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup by bringing in Dutch-born, America-based coach Thomas Rongen to attempt the seemingly impossible by turning them from perennial losers into winners.
Taika Waititi will also be adapting the script alongside Iain Morris. Imaginarium Productions’ Andy Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish acquired the rights for the documentary back in 2015 and brought it to Waititi’s attention, who then brought on Garrett Basch to produce as Fox Searchlight worked aggressively to land the film rights and already plan to commence filming in the fall.
Serkis and Cavenish will serve as producers on the project alongside Mike Brett and Steve Jamison, who directed the documentary.
