The Hollywood Reporter is exclusively reporting that Sisi Stringer and Mechad Brooks are the latest names to join the cast whilst Tadanobu Asano is in negotiations to star in New Line’s upcoming reboot of Mortal Kombat.
The plot for the reboot is currently being kept under wraps, but the 1995 film (directed by Paul W.S Anderson) focused on three unknowing martial artists who are summoned to a mysterious island to compete in a tournament whose outcome will decide the fate of the world.
Sisi Stringer will be making her acting debut as Mileena, an unstable, sai-jabbing assassin, while Mechad Brooks (whose credits include Supergirl and Necessary Roughness) will be playing the role of Jackson ‘Jax’ Briggs, the Special Forces muscleman who is a mainstay in the video game franchise. Tadanobu Asano (whose credits include The Outsider and Thor: Ragnarok) meanwhile is in talks to play the role Raiden, the Japanese god of thunder.
The video game franchise, which started in 1992, has gone on to sell 49m copies worldwide. The script for the reboot has been written by Greg Russo, with James Wan producing the project under his banner Atomic Monster. Simon McQuoid, a veteran commercial director, will be making his directorial feature debut here with Mortal Kombat. Todd Garner will serve as producer while Larry Kasanoff, E. Bennett Walsh, Michael Clear and Sean Robins will serve as executive producers.
Mortal Kombat is set to shoot later this year in southern Australia and is currently scheduled for cinematic release on the 5th March 2021.
