The Matrix: Lana Wachowski To Write And Direct Fourth Installment, Keanu Reeves And Carrie-Anne Moss To Reprise Roles

Variety is exclusively reporting that Warner Bros. is keen to enter The Matrix again as Lana Wachowski is set to write and direct a fourth film set within that world, with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss also returning to reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity.

The 1999 film had us following Thomas A. Anderson, a seamlessly average computer programmer that worked as a computer hacker known by the name of Neo. When he’s contacted by the legendary hacker named Morpheus, he finds himself targeted by police. As Neo finally comes face to face with Morpheus, he wakes up in the real world….a ravaged wasteland where most of humanity has been captured by a race of machines that live off humans and who imprison their minds in an artificial reality known as the Matrix.

The Wachowski sisters (Lana and Lily) film spawned two sequels (The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions), with the trilogy making $1.6bn worldwide at the box office, and it also spawned an animated anthology feature titled The Animatrix.

Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich made the announcement today, saying:

We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana. Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.

Lana Wachowski released a statement saying:

Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.

Warner Bros. had been eyeing a potential reboot a few years ago with Michael B. Jordan being circled for the lead, but a hold up over producing rights on who owned what slowed down the development. Also included in the report is that Lana Wachowski will be writing the script with Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell, as well as serve as producer alongside Grant Hill.

Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and distribute the film worldwide and sources claim that the film is being eyed to begin production at the top of 2020.
