Deadline is exclusively reporting that Brandon Routh and Courtney Ford will be exiting as series regulars in the upcoming fifth season of the CW’s DC drama series DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
The synopsis for the fourth season is as follows:
After defeating the demon Mallus by cuddling him to death with a giant stuffed animal named Beebo, the Legends are ready to ease off the gas. Sara and her team join Ava Sharpe and the Time Bureau to help clean up the last few remaining anachronisms. The job seems straightforward enough until Constantine arrives to inform them that, in solving one major problem, they have created another, much larger one. When the Legends let time crumble in order to release and defeat Mallus, the barrier between worlds softened. History is now infected with “Fugitives” – magical creatures from myths, fairytales, and legends. Having been expelled throughout time by people like Constantine, these Fugitives are now returning to our world in droves and making a real mess of things. As the Time Bureau is distrustful of and ill-equipped to deal with magic, the Legends must team up with everyone’s favourite demonologist to set history back on track.
The report from Deadline states that their departure from the series is said to be a creative decision to wrap up their storyline, but obviously considering the time travelling aspect of the series, the producers are leaving the door open for Ray Palmer/The Atom and Nora Darhk to return for guest appearances in the future.
Legends of Tomorrow executive producers Phil Klemmer, Grianne Godfree and Keto Shimizu released a statement saying:
Brandon and Courtney have been invaluable members of the Legends family. They have always brought a level passion and collaboration to their characters and to the show — both on and off the screen – that we deeply admire and for which we are eternally grateful. As one of the founding Legends of Tomorrow, Brandon is extremely beloved by the fans and everyone on the show. Of course, when we have had main characters in the past whose journeys take them away from the Waverider, it’s never truly goodbye. We love these characters and hope to check in with them in future seasons, to see how life off the ship has transformed them for better or worse.
Brandon Routh released a statement saying:
I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to bring the big-hearted and humorous Ray Palmer to life for our fans over the last 5 years, but unfortunately, his storyline is pointed in another direction. I’m saddened to see Ray’s journey end for now but wish my Legends family well.
Courtney Ford released a statement saying:
Nora Darhk is very close to my heart. If it were my choice, I’d play her for years to come. But I understand that stories run their course, and I’m grateful for the time I did have bringing Nora to life on Legends of Tomorrow.
Brandon Routh is one of the mainstays of the Legends of Tomorrow series, appearing since its premiere after being introduced to audiences as Ray Plamer in the third season of Arrow and his depart leaves Caity Lotz and Dominic Purcell as the only remaining original cast members since the first episode. Courtney Ford was introduced to audiences as Nora Darhk in a recurring capacity in the third season, then promoted to series regular in the fourth season.
It’s unclear as to where their departure episode will be aired during the fifth season’s run, but it’s understood that their final episode will be filmed in October.
The fifth season of Legends of Tomorrow stars Caity Lotz, Brandon Routh, Dominic Purcell, Nick Zano, Amy Pemberton, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Jes Macallan, Tala Ashe, Matt Ryan, Courtney Ford, Ramona Young, Olivia Swann and Adam Tsekhman.
