The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Ana de la Reguera has signed on to star in the lead role for the latest instalment in the horror thriller Purge franchise from Blumhouse, Platinum Dunes and Universal.
The premise of The Purge series is set in near future America where once a year there is a twelve hour period where all crime, including the most insane acts of murder, are legal.
The original starred Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey, making over $89m worldwide on a $3m budget. While the original was a contained thriller, its sequel Purge: Anarchy, went city wide and was more action orientated starring Frank Grillo, making over $111m worldwide on a $9m budget. The third instalment, Purge: Election Year, seen Frank Grillo reprise his role from Anarchy and star alongside Elizabeth Mitchell, making over $118m worldwide on a $10m budget. The last instalment, The First Purge, made over $137m worldwide on a $13m budget.
It’s unclear what role Ana de la Reguera (whose credits include Power and Narcos) will be playing, but the THR report states that it’s believed that the fifth film will be taking place outside of its usual metropolitan setting while still dealing with class and race issues similar to the previous films.
The Purge creator James DeMonaco has written the script for this untitled instalment, while Everardo Gout is attached to direct.
Purge 5 is scheduled for cinematic release on the 10th July 2020.
