Deadline is exclusively reporting that Joe Russo has closed a deal to write the script for the sequel to the Netflix action film Extraction starring Chris Hemsworth.
The original film focused on mercenary Tyler Rake, who is handed the assignment of saving Ovi Mahajan, the young son of India’s biggest crime lord Ovi Mahajan Sr., whose been kidnapped by rival and Bangladesh’s crime lord Amir Asif. While Tyler finds and saves the young Ovi from his captures, Amir puts the city of Dhaka on lockdown, leading to Tyler and Ovi having to navigate their way through corrupt police and military figures as well as Amir’s young soldiers in order to escape and get Ovi to safety.
Speaking with Deadline, Joe Russo said:
The deal is closed for me to write Extraction 2, and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be. We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience.
The report also states that AGBO, the production company run by the Russo Brothers, are optimistic that they can get director Sam Hargrave and star Chris Hemsworth to return for the next installment, though those deals won’t be signed until the script is ready.
Whether the film will be a prequel or a sequel remains anyones guess, with Joe Russo saying:
There was always a simple drive to the story, a balletic execution of action where you take a damaged character who made an egregious mistake in the past and has a shot at redemption which might be fatal. What was key is that we needed a muscular action director like Sam to be the main creative force in the execution of the action.
Extraction has been a big hit for everyone involved on the Netflix film, with the film being projected to have screen in 90m households over the next four weeks. The film also starred Randeep Hooda, David Harbour, Manoj Bajpayee, Golshifteh Farahani, Rohit Sukhwani, Rudraksh Jaiswal, Marc Donato, Pankaj Tripathi, Priyanshu Painyulli, Adam Bessa, Suraj Rikame and Shataf Figar.
