Deadline is exclusively reporting that YouTube’s flagship scripted series Cobra Kai, sequel series to the original Karate Kid trilogy, will be moving to a new streaming platform for its upcoming third season, with Netflix and Hulu currently leading the way from the short list of contenders.
Cobra Kai is set thirty-four years after the events of the original film which concluded in Daniel LaRusso defeating Johnny Lawrence in the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, we get a look in the daily lives of Johnny and Daniel. The first season saw Johnny Lawrence reopen the infamous Cobra Kai karate dojo, mentor young neighbour Miguel and reignite his rivalry with Daniel LaRusso. The second season sees Daniel open up Miyagi-Do Karate, creating a dojo not to show how to be a badass like Cobra Kai, but by showing others that there is a better way…balance. The rivalry between Johnny and Daniel now extends to their students, as Cobra Kai vs Miyagi-Do rivalry begins and leads down a course that could change their paths forever.
The news shouldn’t come as a surprise as in the last few years, the Google-owned online video service has been retreating from premium original scripted programming, with the only two left being Cobra Kai and Liza On Demand, starring popular YouTube personality Liza Koshy.
While no one has officially commented on the matter yet, the reporter states that they’ve heard that, along with the exclusive rights to season 3 of Cobra Kai, the new streaming platform will have access on a non-exclusive basis to the first two seasons of the series for fans to catch up. This has been part of the negotiation YouTube, which hand ownership in and exclusive rights for the first two seasons under the original license agreement with Sony Pictures TV.
YouTube did renew the series well over a year ago for a third season and remained committed to airing the season, but notified its Sony TV partners that they won’t be commissioning a fourth season, leading to finding a new home to secure a future for the series beyond a third season and now they look set to be nearing a successful conclusion.
I for one hope that in this climate a streamer will pick up the series, which has been one of the most pleasant surprises in the last year years.
The second season of Cobra Kai stars William Zabka, Ralph Macchio, Martin Kove, Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, Jacob Bertrand, Hannah Kepple, Nichole Brown, Griffin Santopietro, Vanessa Rubio, Gianni Decenzo, Peyton List and Paul Walter Hauser.
I love this show! I’ve watched both Seasons twice.
