TVLine is reporting that Javicia Leslie has signed up to star as the new Batwoman for the upcoming second season of the DC drama series at the CW.
The first season focused on Kate Kane, who, armed with a passion for social justice and flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet…in a city desperate for a saviour, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.
Javicia Leslie released a statement saying:
I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honoured to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community.
The casting comes a few months after Ruby Rose departed the series as Kate Kane, meaning Javicia Leslie (whose credits include God Unfriended Me and The Family Business) will be playing a new character named Ryan Wilder who is about to become Batwoman. She’s likeable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the Batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.
The first season of Batwoman also starred Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Nicole Kang, Camrus Johnson, Elizabeth Anweis and Dougray Scott.
