Whilst there’s no details of the storyline for this film adaptation of the titular character, Black Adam originated in DC Comics as a corrupted, ancient Egyptian predecessor of Captain Marvel/Shazam, who fought his way to modern times to challenge the hero and the Shazam Family. In recent times in the comics however, Black Adam has evolved into a more complex and conflicted antihero, with his origins tied to the fictional Middle Eastern kingdom of Kahndaq.
Noah Centineo (whose credits include To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before and Charlie’s Angels) will be playing the role of Atom Smasher, a character who can control his molecular structure and is able to manipulate his size and strengths. In DC Comics, the alter ego of Atom Smasher is Albert Rothstein, who also has interacted with Black Adams in the comics, first as a rival who refused to believe that Black Adam had reformed, but the two form an unlikely bond. The character has been portrayed in live-action before, appearing in the second season of The Flash, with Adam ‘Edge’ Copeland playing the part.
The project will to be discussed further in the upcoming DC FanDome, Warner Bros.’ own Comic-Con style experience that will celebrate all things DC, presenting panels for TV shows and films, as well as potential new trailers, in a 24-hour event on the 22nd August 2020.
The film is written by Adam Sztykiel and will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra.
