Ben Schwartz, who voices the title character of Sonic The Hedgehog, confirmed on Twitter last night that the sequel to Sonic The Hedgehog has been pencilled in by Paramount Pictures for a cinematic release on the 8th April 2022.
The official synopsis for the original film is as follows:
Sonic The Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centres on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski. Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination.
The sequel will bring back the original team, with Jeff Fowler directing, and Pat Casey and Josh Miller writing the script.
The sequel will be produced by Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and Toru Nakahara, while Hajime Satomi, Haruki Satomi and Tim Miller will serve as executive producers. The film had a budget of $85m and was released in the US on the 25th January and then the UK/Ireland on the 14th February, earning $360.7m worldwide. During its cinematic run, the film would earn the title of No.1 opening weekend of all time for a film based on a video game, and also have the fourth-best Presidents Day weekend debut.
