Deadline is exclusively reporting that after a competitive auction, Sony’s TriStar Pictures have acquired the rights for the hot package I Wanna Dance With Somebody, a biopic focusing on the life and music of Whitney Houston.
The project, was was revealed to be being put into shape back in April, was being chased by six streamers and studios, according to the report, with Sony prevailing in the end. The project is formed by The Whitney Houston Estate, Primary Wave and Grammy-winning music producer and Whitney Houston’s mentor Clive Davis.
Stella Meghie, who recently directed The Photograph, is attached to helm the film, with Anthony McCarten, who has earned two Academy Award nominations in the Best Adapted Screenplay categories for his work in The Theory of Everything and The Two Popes, is onboard to write the script. Anthony McCarten will be producing alongside Pat Houston on behalf of the Houston Estate, Clive Davis, Larry Mestel on behalf of Primary Wave Music, Denis O’Sullivan and Jeff Kalligheri.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody is already being scheduled by TriStar Pictures for a cinematic release on Thanksgiving, 24th November 2022.
