Deadline is reporting that Amandla Stenberg has signed up to join the cast of Universal’s film adaptation of the Tony award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen.
The film is based on the musical play of the same name, with music and lyrics written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, focuses on Evan Hansen, a high school senior with a severe Social Anxiety disorder, whose letter to himself, one that was not meant to be seen by others, lands into the wrong hands of a fellow classmate who, as a result, commits suicide. This incident sends Evan on a journey of self-discovery and gives him the chance to finally be accepted by his peers and live the life he never dreamed he could have.
Amandla Stenberg (whose credits include The Hate U Give and The Eddy) will be playing the role of Alana, a high school senior whose cheery façade and social-media savvy mask a deeper loneliness and isolation, and whose response to the death of a classmate ignites a movement.
The report stares that the role has been reconceived and expanded for the film adpatation, with Stenberg singing a new original song composed for the film, and collaborating on writing the song with Pasek and Paul.
Steven Levenson, who wrote the book for the stage musical, is adapting the screenplay for the big screen, while Stephen Chbosky is attached to direct. Marc Platt and Adam Siegel will be producing the project under their Marc Platt Productions banner. Stenberg will star alongside Ben Platt.
