Dwayne Johnson hosted the presentation of Black Adam at DC FanDome, in which concept art for the film was revealed as well as Johnson confirming that the film will introduce the Justice Society of America, with characters including Atom Smash, Doctor Fate, Hawkman and Cyclone.
Black Adam originated in DC Comics as a corrupted, ancient Egyptian predecessor of Captain Marvel/Shazam, who fought his way to modern times to challenge the hero and the Shazam Family. In recent times in the comics however, Black Adam has evolved into a more complex and conflicted antihero, with his origins tied to the fictional Middle Eastern kingdom of Kahndaq.
The Justice Society of America was introduced in DC Comics back in the 1940s. In this film, film-viewing audiences will be introduced to a few characters they may not be familiar with. Doctor Fate is a powerful sorcerer and agent for the Lords of Order who fights evil. His amulet, cloak and helmet are creations of the ancient Nabu (A cosmic being) who acts as his mentor and spiritual guide. Cyclone has wind manipulation powers that allows her to create dangerous storms and air constructs. Atom Smasher is the grandson of super-villain Cyclotron, which he has inherited his metahuman powers by which he can control his molecular structure and is able to manipulate his size and strengths.
The Justice Society is revealed in concept art, with Johnson narrating:
I have a knack for destroying bullies, but there are some who think I need help. Hawkman, Doctor Fate, and their new recruits: Cyclone and Atom Smasher. They call themselves the Justice Society, an organisation that believes in fighting for truth and justice. Well I’m going to teach them that the only beliefs I fight for are mine. Welcome to truth, justice, and the Black Adam way.
Noah Centineo, recently cast as Atom Smasher, said:
Al, his real name [is] Al Rothstein, really has something to prove. His grandfather was kind of a villain. What I love about the character is he goes through this transformation… Because this is his first mission, it’s this journey that he goes on of what it means to be a superhero.
While I know some were disappointed in not getting any footage shown for Black Adam, it’s worth taking into account that the film is yet to commence production yet, which originally was set for earlier this summer but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s been delayed but expected to commence in the next few weeks. I am excited mainly for the addition of Doctor Fate and I wonder who will be cast in the roles of Fate and Cyclone. The film is written by Adam Sztykiel and will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra.
Black Adam is currently scheduled for cinematic release on the 22nd December 2021.
