Deadline is exclusively reporting that DeMarius Copes is the latest name to join the cast of Universal’s film adaptation of the Tony award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen.
The film is based on the musical play of the same name, with music and lyrics written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, focuses on Evan Hansen, a high school senior with a severe Social Anxiety disorder, whose letter to himself, one that was not meant to be seen by others, lands into the wrong hands of a fellow classmate who, as a result, commits suicide. This incident sends Evan on a journey of self-discovery and gives him the chance to finally be accepted by his peers and live the life he never dreamed he could have.
DeMarius Copes, who is part of the original cast of Mean Girls on Broadway, will be playing the role of Oliver, one of Zoe Murphy’s friends. This will mark his feature debut.
Steven Levenson, who wrote the book for the stage musical, is adapting the screenplay for the big screen, while Stephen Chbosky is attached to direct. Marc Platt and Adam Siegel will be producing the project under their Marc Platt Productions banner.
DeMarius Copes joins a cast that includes Ben Platt, Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, Nik Dodani, Amy Adams, Danny Pino and Julianne Moore.
