Deadline is exclusively reporting that Netflix is set to acquire the worldwide rights for Sam Levinson’s romantic drama Malcolm & Marie starring Zendaya and John David Washington.
The film is set to focus on a filmmaker who returns home with his girlfriend following a celebratory movie premiere as he awaits what’s sure to be imminent critical and financial success. The evening suddenly takes a turn as revelations about their relationships begin to surface, testing the strength of their love.
The report from Deadline states that the deal, being made at the market at Toronto Film Festival, is reportedly meant to be sealed with the figure being near the sum of $30m. They also reported that CAA Media Finance and Endeavor Content has screened promo footage at TIFF to potential buyers late last week, with sources saying the reel was about twenty-minutes long.
The film was filmed during the 17th June till the 2nd July at Feldman Architecture’s Caterpillar House, in compliance with WGA, DGA and SAG-AFTRA, and extensive COVID-19 safety protocols. The film came to be after production on Levinson and Zendaya’s series, Euphoria, was shut down and after Zendaya asked Levinson if he would write and direct a film with her during quarantine, the concept come through as quickly as the script, and then they brought John David Washington on board.

The cast and crew of Malcolm & Marie will be sharing a portion of the proceeds of this deal with Feeding America. The film is produced by Levinson, Kevin Turen and Ashley Levinson under Little Lamb Productions banner, with Zendaya, John David Washington, Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, Will Greenfield, Aaron L. Gilbert and Scott Mescudi serving as executive producers. Harrison Kreiss, Katia Washington, Stuart Manashil and Kenneth Yu serve as co-executive producers.
