The Expanse: Renewed For Sixth And Final Season At Amazon

Deadline is exclusively reporting that, ahead of its season 5 premiere, Amazon have renewed the popular sci-fi drama series The Expanse for a sixth season, which will also be the series last.

The Expanse is a series based on the best-selling book series of the same name by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. The story unfolds across a colonised galaxy 200 years in the future, when two strangers become unwittingly swept up in a vast conspiracy.

The official synopsis for the fifth season is as follows:

The future of The Belt has begun as Marco Inaros wages Armageddon against the Inners for a lifetime of oppression and injustice.

The report also states that original cast member Cas Anvar, who has faced allegations of sexual misconduct allegations during the summer, will not be returning for the final season. The sixth season is being eyed for a production date of the 20th January 2021, though that’s subject to change amid fluid pandemic conditions.

Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, Co-CEOs and Co-Founders of Alcon Television Group, as well as executive producers of The Expanse, released a statement saying:

From the moment we committed to bringing this show to life up until this final season, we have worked tirelessly to honour the vision of the writers. We have prided ourselves on having one of the most diverse casts on television and giving a platform to stories that matter. A special thanks to Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, the writers of both the books and series, and to Naren Shankar, the series showrunner and Executive Producer. It continues to be an honour and privilege to work with this team. We also would like to thank Amazon for their continuing support to help us tell this story in its fullest and to bring The Expanse to a global audience.

Executive Producer and Showrunner, Naren Shankar, also released a statement saying:

The dedication and artistry of everyone who helps bring The Expanse to the screen is incredible. Our fans are awesome, and we cannot wait to get rolling on Season Six!

I’m happy/sad with this news, primarily because I would love for the series to go on longer. But, considering it was originally cancelled by SyFy after three seasons, we will have had three extra seasons thanks to Amazon picking it up, so at least mentally I’ll be prepared for the endgame with season 6.

The upcoming fifth season stars Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Frankie Adams, Cara Gee, Chad L. Coleman, Anna Hopkins, Nadine Nicole, Keon Alexander and Jasai Chase Owens.

The Expanse season 5 will premiere on Amazon Prime on the 16th December 2020.
