Deadline is exclusively reporting that Dennis Quaid, Virgina Madsen, Ser’Darius Blain, Adam Baldwin, Bruce McGill, Danny Vinson, Chance Kelly and Hayden Zaller are the latest names to join the cast of upcoming biopic drama American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story at Lionsgate.
The film, based on his interviews, as well as his memoir ‘All Things Possible: My Story of Faith, Football and the First Miracle Season’, chronicles the story of how Kurt Warner went from stocking shelves at a supermarket to become a two-time NFL MVP, Super Bowl MVP and Hall of Fame quarterback. Kurt Warner played in the NFL from 1994 to 2008 and is regarded as one of the top undrafted players in NFL history.
Dennis Quaid (whose credits include The Intruder and Midway) will be playing the role of St. Louis Rams coach Dick Vermeil. Virginia Madsen (whose credits include Swamp Thing and Operation Christmas Drop) will be playing the role of Sue Warner, Kurt’s mother. Ser’Darius Blain (whose credits include Charmed and Jumanji: The Next Level) will be playing the role of Mike Hudnutt, Kurt’s best friend. Adam Baldwin (whose credits include The Last Ship and The Kid) will be playing the role of Terry Allen, Kurt’s coach at the University of Northern Iowa. Bruce McGill (whose credits include Shades of Blue and Troubled Waters) will be playing the role of Jim Foster, owner of the Arena Football League’s Iowa Barnstorms, where Kurt signs on his way to rebuilding his NFL career. Danny Vinson (whose credits include Lodge 49 and The Purge) will be playing the role of Larry, Brenda’s father. Chance Kelly (whose credits include Power and Ray Donovan) will be playing the role of the Rams’ offensive coordinator, and later head coach, Mike Martz. Hayden Zoller will be playing the role of Zack, Brenda’s son.
The Erwin Brothers, Jon and Andrew, will be directing the film, with the screenplay written by David Aaron Cohen, Jon Gunn and Jon Erwin, with the Erwin Brothers also serving as producers under their Kingdom Story Company banner alongside Mark Ciardi and Kevin Downes. Kurt and Brenda Warner will serve as co-producers.
