Variety is exclusively reporting that the Oscar-nominated director Promising Young Woman, Emerald Fennell, has been tapped by Warner Bros. and Bad Robot to write the film adaptation of DC Comics heroine Zatanna.
Zatanna Zatara is a popular character from DC Comics that first appeared back in 1964, created by Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson, who like her father before her (Giovanni ‘John’ Zatara) is both a stage magician and an actual magician, one of the most powerful sorcerers to be precise in DC cannon. Over the history of DC Comics, Zatanna has been affiliated with Young Justice, Justice League and Justice League Dark.
This would mark Zatanna’s film debut in the DC Extended Universe (if we’re still calling it that), having only appeared once in live-action, portrayed by Serinda Swan in the later seasons of Smallville. The immediate reaction to the news is that I’m loving the fact that a Zatanna solo film project is finally getting some legs to begin development, though considering the trajectory that Emerald Fennell’s stock is at at this moment (Golden Globe and Oscar nominated director for her directorial feature debut) that they haven’t officially attached her to direct as well.
The report states that it is DC Films and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robots Productions intentions to have the film released in cinemas.
