Thundercats: Adam Wingard To Direct Film Adaptation At Warner Bros.

Deadline is exclusively reporting that Godzilla vs Kong director Adam Wingard has signed up to helm the film adaptation of the 1980’s animated series Thundercats at Warner Bros.

The series focused on a group of cat-like humanoid aliens who are forced to flee their dying planet of Thundera, eventually stopping at Third Earth. Unfortunately their enemies, the Mutants of Plun-Darr, have tracked them down and set out to destroy the Thundercats and acquire the Eye of Thundera for the demonic, mummified sorcerer Mumm-Ra so that his evil might can continue to hold sway over Third Earth.

The original animated series aired for four seasons between 1985 to 1989, with a reboot animated series airing in 2011 that only lasted one season. Thundercats has also had a comic book series run and merchandise.

The film project has been developed by Rideback’s Dan Lin and Veritgo’s Roy Lee, with an early script written by David Coggeshall. Now Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett will rewrite the script, with the film being set to be a hybrid of CGI and animation.
