Deadline is exclusively reporting that Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson’s Appian Way, Endeavor Content and Brad Weston’s Makeready have won the rights to develop the English-language remake of Thomas Vinterberg’s Academy Award-winning Best International Film, Another Round, which could also be a potential star vehicle for DiCaprio.
The film focuses on four friends and high school teachers Martin, Tommy, Peter and Nikolaj, with one of them bringing to their attention that Norwegian psychiatrist Finn Skårderud claimed that humans had an alcohol deficit of 0.05% in their bodies, and if that 0.05% was consumed, humans would be more productive and generally happier. As the four test the theory, they discover improvements in themselves and each other almost immediately, pushing their limits with the theory leads to drastic changes and consequences.
The report states that the rights were highly sough-after, with several companies in the room looking to acquire the English-language rights, from Studiocanal with The Picture Company, to Jake Gyllenhaal an Riva Marker’s Nine Stories, and Elizabeth Banks with Universal Pictures. The auction, held by Vinterberg’s ICM Partners reps, unfolded during the final two weeks of the Academy Awards race, with Appian Way sealing the deal as Vinterberg is curious to see DiCaprio in a new role, the vulnerable middle-aged man in an existential crisis, played brilliantly in the original film by Mads Mikkelsen.
The film will be fully funded by Endeavor Content and Makeready, with DiCaprio, Davisson, and Weston producing alongside Negin Salmasi. Thomas Vinterberg will executive produce alongside Sisse Graum Jørgensen and Kasper Dissing. The project will immediately begin the search to hire a writer to adapt the screenplay.
