Deadline is exclusively reporting that Rutina Wesley, Mamie Gummer, Nora Dunn, Henry G. Sanders, Venus Ariel, Jade Wu, Rey Gallegos, Agam Darshi and Juani Feliz are the latest names to join the cast for the upcoming HBO Max series DMZ.
DMZ is set in the near future where America is embroiled in a Civil War, leaving Manhattan a demilitarised zone (hence DMZ), destroyed and isolated from the rest of the world. The limited series will focus on Alma Ortega, a fearless and fierce medic whose on a journey to find the son she lost in the evacuation of New York City at the start of the conflict. During her journey she will encounter Parco Delgado, the popular, and deadly leader of one of the most powerful gangs in the DMZ who wants to rule this new world and will stop at nothing to secure that outcome.
Rutina Wesley (whose credits include Queen Sugar and True Blood) will be playing the role of Athena, a calculating operative for the separatist Free States of America, and the most effective power broker in the DMZ that no one there has heard of. Mamie Gummer (whose credits include True Detective and Blood of Zeus) will be playing the role of Rose, a jaded medic who tirelessly cares for the ill and injured of this disenfranchised population, regardless of the cost. Nora Dunn (whose credits include The Lost Husband and Home Economics) will be playing the role of Oona, a powerful fixture of near-mythical stature who oversees an all-female commune, along with the most valuable currency in all the DMZ: the water supply. Henry G. Sanders (whose credits include Queen Sugar and Hap and Leonard) will be playing the role of Cedric, a straight-shooting citizen of the DMZ whose only care in the world is protecting his grandson. Venus Ariel (whose credits include NCIS: New Orleans and Exposed) will be playing the role of Nico, a foul-mouthed scavenger with a hankering for mischief. Jade Wu whose credits include Luke Cage and Snakehead) will be playing the role of Susie, whose revolutionary past has shown her that the best of humanity can be discovered at its worst moments. Rey Gallegos (whose credits include Animal Kingdom and Generation) will be playing the role of Cesar, a ruthless and devoted consigliere who’ll stop at nothing to secure his gang’s authority in the DMZ. Agam Darshi (whose credits include Funny Boy and Sanctuary) will be playing the role of Franklin, one of the only smugglers who can get someone in or out of the DMZ. Juani Feliz (whose credits include Harlem and Blue Bloods) will be playing the role of Carmen, the fearless and fiery partner to the biggest bad in the DMZ, and a critical source of power and community in her native Spanish Harlem.
The report also states that Ernest Dickerson and Carly Wray have joined the creative team, with Dickerson set to direct and executive produce three episodes, with Ava DuVernay having directed the pilot. Carly Wray will be joining the writing team and serve as co-executive producer alongside showrunner Robert Patino, who wrote the pilot.
