Deadline is exclusively reporting that KJ Smith has signed up for a major recurring role for the upcoming second season of Starz crime drama series Power Book III: Raising Kanan.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan, is a prequel series set in the 1990’s that will chronicle the early years of Kanan Stark, whose world revolves around his mother Raq, who raised him by herself. She is his everything. At the same time, he is beginning to get a sense of not only the world around him but his place in said world. Kanan wants to be just like his mother…and that’s the problem. He’s young and wide-eyed and doesn’t know how the hustle works. And even more important, his mother is not nearly as keen as he is for him to follow in her footsteps. Theirs is a complicated relationship that only gets more problematic as time goes on.

KJ Smith (whose credits include Sistas and The Family Business) will be playing the role of Palomar. One of Famous’s new neighbours, Palomar is a young mum who’s frequently mistaken for her daughter, Corinne’s, older sister. Any responsible parent wouldn’t let their daughter within a mile of Kanan, Famous, and their friends, but Palomar is not that parent.

Series creator, Sascha Penn, will continue to be showrunner on the second season, whilst also executive producing alongside franchise creator Courtney A. Kemp, Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson, Mark Canton of Atmosphere Entertainment, Chris Selak of End of Episode, Shana Stein, Bart Wenrich and Kevin Fox.
