Deadline is exclusively reporting that Michelle Yeoh, Ben Wang, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Daniel Wu, Ke Huy Quan, Jim Liu and Sydney Taylor are set to star the the fantastical Disney+ series American Born Chinese, which Destin Daniel Cretton is directing.

The series is set to focus on Jin Wang, an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life. When he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.

Michelle Yeoh (whose recent credits include The Witcher: Blood Origin and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) will be playing the role of Guanyin. She is an unassuming auntie who helps her nephew Wei-Chen navigate the challenges of American high school while maintaining her secret identity as the all-powerful Buddhist bodhisattva of Compassion.

Ben Wang (whose credits include Search Party and Sex Appeal) will be playing the role of Jin Wang, the American teen whose parents immigrated from Taiwan, and who is struggling to carve out exactly who he’s supposed to be, socially and culturally.

Yeo Yann Yann (whose credits include Wet Season and Invisible Stories) will be playing the role of Jin’s mom, Christine Wang, a strong-willed, opinionated woman with a sly wit, who loves her family deeply. Chin Han (whose credits include Mortal Kombat and Skyscraper) will be playing the role of Jin’s father Simon, a hard-working, devoted father and husband who is bumping up against the “bamboo ceiling” at his job.

Daniel Wu (whose credits include Into The Badlands and Reminiscence) will be playing the role of Sun Wukong “The Monkey King,” the legendary, all-powerful god of the Chinese epic Journey to the West, who enters our world in search of his son.

Ke Huy Quan (whose credits include Head of the Class and Finding ‘Ohana) will be playing the role of Freddy Wong, a fictional character from a popular mid-90’s sitcom. Jim Liu will be playing the role of Jin’s confident friend Wei-Chen, a teen who has just arrived in the United States, whose sweet demeanour belies the deeper mystery of his true identity. Sydney Taylor (whose credits include Splitting Up Together and Just Add Magic: Mystery City) will be playing the role of Amelia, a friendly “All-American” girl who is Jin’s classmate and crush.

The series is set to explore themes such as identity, culture, and family. It is an adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel, which is adapted here by Kelvin Yu, who serves as executive producer and showrunner. Cretton also executive produces whilst directing the series. Other executive producers include Melvin Mar, Jake Kasdan, Erin O’Malley, Asher Goldstein and Gene Luen Yang.
